Others DevelopmentsBlock of FlatsHospitalH.F.P. was instrumental in providing 18,000m² of hospital infrastructure in and around Lagos. The Lagoon Hospital at Marine Road, Apapa, is a three-storey complex consisting of a ground floor lobby, offices, laboratories, theatres, private and open wards with a standby generator, garden areas and parking facilities. In 1987, H.F.P. constructed another five-storey hospital complex in Apapa. The company also constructed the skeleton of the Aramed Hospital Complex on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. It is symmetrical in design, consisting of 10 buildings of two, three, and four storey blocks, linked by corridors. It has all the features of a modern hospital. The Lagos State Government also commissioned H.F.P. to renovate and expand sections of the Lagos General Hospital.SchoolsH.F.P. was awarded contracts to design and build government school complexes in Oko-Awo, Ebute-Elefun, Ibgosere, Ikoyi and the Oniru Grammar School in Victoria Island. Following its success with Government Schools, H.F.P. was contracted to build two private schools, consisting mainly of three blocks of four-storey, semi-prefabricated buildings, containing classrooms, laboratories, offices, staff rooms, libraries and toilets. Over the years, H.F.P. constructed 29,000m² of school space.MonumentsThe Lagos State Ministry of Tourism awarded H.F.P. a contract for the renovation of the 27 year-old monumental fountain structure known as Tinubu Square in Central Lagos, a project completed in six months. H.F.P. was also hired to landscape and fence the Bar-beach in Victoria Island. This project included the provision of roads, walkways, parking facilities, laying interlocking paving stones, kerbstones and prefabricated covered gutters.Industrial Projects Between 1979 and 1983, a few private concerns and corporate bodies contracted H.F.P. to build and develop some of their industrial projects, including:
Road improvements/pavingAlmost all Nigerian roads are built with asphalt, and it is not unusual to find many roads of very low quality. Consequently, the roads are in a poor state of repair, with new roads crumbling in some sections after one or two years of use. The existing road maintenance program, also using asphalt, was not improving the situation either. In 1986, H.F.P. introduced the use of concrete interlocking paving stones to the Nigerian roads market. They have a unique ability to evenly and laterally transfer loads and stress, due to an arching or bridging action between units, and they allow heavier loads and traffic over sub-bases normally requiring heavily reinforced concrete. They are easily maintained, can easily be opened for underground work, and the units can be re-laid to their original position and appearance. Road Maintenance in Victoria Island Having gained experience in road paving from VGC and other construction projects, H.F.P offered to carry out the maintenance and repair of the State’s roads using its own interlocking paving stones. The Lagos State Government agreed and the company was awarded projects covering the entire annual 1996 budget for the maintenance of the roads and drainage systems in the Victoria Island region, the exclusive residential/commercial area of Lagos. The maintenance was carried out at a lower cost, with the benefit of providing long-lasting, minimal maintenance roads, and solving the perennial flooding problems. Road and Drainage System for the Foreshore Region The LSDPC and the Federal Ministry of Works initiated the drainage of swampland between Banana Island and the Ikoyi area, in the Foreshore region, as a base for erecting residential structures. H.F.P. was awarded a project to pave the roads and build a drainage system for the area. Road Works Program in Port Harcourt, Rivers State The Government of Nigeria decided to allocate a certain amount of its annual gasoline revenues for the purpose of building and developing the national infrastructure. These activities were carried out on the federal level through the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF). PTF awarded projects on an ongoing basis for various infrastructure works programs, including roads, electricity and telecommunications systems. Since H.F.P. was the only company in Nigeria at that time capable of paving roads with interlocking stones, it was awarded two road building projects in Rivers State. In order to assist H.F.P., Rivers State allocated 50,000m² of industrial land to erect its own stone production factory. The company purchased two additional paving stones production lines and began work to supply the required amount of interlocking stones needed for Phase 1 (15km) of the Kolo-Nembe Road, and 9km of the Ndoni-Mmadu Road. |
